For more than a
century and a half, Upmann has come readily to the lips of cigar connoisseurs.
Today, the legend lives on in the rich, smooth satisfaction of handmade cigars
that are unmistakably H. Upmann.
A distinctive cigar begins with fine tobacco. Tobacco that is as much a result
of experience and knowledge as soil and sun. Today's H. Upmann is a premium
blend of long filler and natural binder, hand-wrapped in the finest quality
Indonesian shade grown tobacco.
As famous a brand as there is
in the world of cigars, the H. Upmann brand dates back to 1844, when Herman
Upmann, a German banker, began using specially imprinted boxes of cigars as
promotional items for his banking firm. The combination proved successful, so
the H. Upmann brand was born and continues to this day.
The success of this brand was buoyed by the award of seven gold medals in seven
international exhibitions between 1862 and 1893; these awards still adorn the
lithographed interior of the box today. The brand was sold to the British
firm of J. Frankau in 1922 and finally in 1935 to Menendez, Garcia & Cia. prior
to nationalization, continues today in the H. Upmann factory, now known as Jose
Marti.
The famous request of President John F. Kennedy to his press secretary, Pierre
Salinger, to obtain cigars on the evening prior to the declaration of the
American trade embargo in 1961, was for Petit Upmanns.
The quality is immediately apparent in the silky feel and superb craftsmanship.

What is the difference between hand rolled and machine made cigars?
Handmade Cigars - The entire cigar is bunched, rolled and trimmed by individual hand labor. It can be one person working alone on a single cigar, or the work can be divided between a buncher and a roller working on the same cigar. The main criterion is that the entire cigar is completely made by hand from start to finish. Handmade cigars are viewed as premier cigars. Most premium priced cigars are hand made.
Machine-made Cigars - The filler, binder and wrapper are completely assembled by machine. These are quality cigars with good aroma and flavor. But unlike handmade cigars, the price can be a lot less.
Machine Bunched/Hand Rolled Cigars- The filler is bunched by machine and then the filler/binder combination is turned over to a cigar roller, who puts the wrapper on by hand. This technique is often simply referred to as machine bunched. These are the best of both worlds and priced accordingly.
